Wolong Electric America has introduced the newly redesigned Quantum 500 WP medium voltage motor as the latest evolution of its established Quantum Series platform, bringing new levels of power density, rigidity, and mounting flexibility to one of industry’s most widely used frame sizes. The new design supports a broad mix of applications in oil and gas, petroleum and chemical, mining, metals, water and wastewater, pulp and paper, and general processing industries while aligning with applicable API requirements and exceeding IEEE standards for strength and low vibration.

Modern Medium Voltage Workhorse

The Quantum 500 WP medium voltage motor is engineered as a high-performance workhorse for critical industrial processes in Class I Div 2 environments. With four frame sizes and multiple mounting holes, the platform helps users closely match horsepower ratings and bolt patterns across a wide range of installed equipment. In many cases, ratings can now be delivered in a more compact frame size, reducing the weight and footprint while helping simplify system design.

Because the Quantum 500 WP is designed to be compatible with established footprints and interfaces, it supports easy upgrades and replacements for many applications. This makes it attractive for projects where users want a modern medium voltage motor with enhanced performance characteristics without major changes to skids, foundations, or piping.

Rigid Design for Demanding Installations

A key feature of the Quantum 500 frame is mechanical rigidity and low vibration, especially in complex mounting scenarios. The new cast iron nodular design shifts the motor’s natural frequency at least 15 percent away from the normal operating speed range, helping reduce the risk of resonance on rigid bases, flexible skids, and mixed mounting configurations.

To accomplish this, Wolong Electric America increased frame and end-shield stiffness, redesigned the stator-to-frame interface, and transitioned from a single-piece core to an interconnected multi-plate core structure. Core bars and standard flanges are used to create a unified, stiff assembly that helps minimize looseness and limits vibration transfer from the core to the frame. The motor also incorporates a larger shaft diameter and shorter bearing center distances. Sleeve bearings are also internal, decreasing the length of shaft support to allow more compatibility for field replacement.

Mounting Flexibility and Safety

The Quantum 500 WP motor emphasizes flexibility in the field, making it easier for end users and OEMs to fit the motor to specific system layouts. Cast in lifting lugs add installation and service safety.

With dual mounting holes and shaft extensions these motors are suited for NEMA 505-506-507, 508-509, 5010-5011, 5012-5013 frame applications.

505 - 5011 frame sizes are available with a D-flange option that supports true cantilever mounting. Depending on application needs, the motor can be configured for cantilever-only support which is particularly valuable in screw compressor and reciprocating compressor applications where footless, flange-mounted motors are often specified. A robust cast iron end-shield design underpins this capability, enabling the motor to handle the mechanical stress associated with this application.

Long-Life Performance: Bearings, Insulation, and Enclosures

The Quantum 500 WP medium voltage motor is designed for operating voltages up to 6.9 kV and is available in WPI and WPII enclosures to meet different environmental and cooling requirements. It covers a wide horsepower range across 2 – 12 pole configurations, giving users flexibility in balancing speed, torque, and efficiency.

The roller bearing system is engineered to meet industry guidelines, with a calculated bearing life exceeding 100,000 hours under typical conditions and is also proven for high belt load capacities. A sealed winding insulation system, Custom Polyseal®, meets NEMA MG1 requirements for operation in severe environments containing moisture, oil, chemicals, and salt water for consistent performance up to 30 years with long maintenance intervals. It is also built to excel in VFD applications with less than clean waveform electrical current. Designed for mission-critical operations, this reliability profile makes it ideal for pipeline pumping, refinery compression, and mining process applications where downtime is not an option.

Ideal Applications Across Industries

Because of its combination of power density, rigidity, and flexible mounting options, the Quantum 500 WP medium voltage motor can serve a wide range of industrial applications:

●       Screw compressors and reciprocating compressors in oil and gas service.

●       Pipeline and process pumps, including H‑pump style applications.

●       Mining conveyors, crushers, and associated plant equipment.

●       Oil & Gas pump and compression systems that benefit from API-aligned, rigid motor designs.

The platform is configurable to meet specific project requirements while maintaining standard footprints and mounting interfaces. This allows OEMs and end users to tailor features without adding complexity to mechanical integration.
